What is esomeprazole (Nexium)?

Esomeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor that lowers the amount of acid in the stomach. It is used for the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), peptic ulcers, and other conditions caused by stomach acid. It is also used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in men with enlarged prostates. Esomeprazole is available in tablet and capsule form.

Use in Children

Esomeprazole should not be taken in children under 12 years old. It is only used for the treatment of reflux disease and for 5 days after the last dose. Esomeprazole should be taken every day for only $10.00 per capsule.

Overdose

If an infant or sudden weight gain is suspected, Esomeprazole should be slowly converted into acarbose. This medicine can be taken with or without food.

Pediatric

The safety and effectiveness of Esomeprazole in children has not been established. It is not intended for use in adults and should only be used under the supervision of a medical professional.

Contraindications

You should not take Esomeprazole if:

• you have a history of severe muscle problems, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, high blood sugar, or bleeding problems after taking this medicine; or
• you are under 18 years old to minimize the risk of complications such as kidney or liver dysfunction.

Side Effects

The most common side effects of this medicine are: nausea, stomach pain, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, constipation with or after meals, and with alcohol.
